There are many elements of a Ferrari that are distinguishable, including its colour. The Rossa Corsa, otherwise known as Racing Red, is Ferrari’s most enigmatic colour. Initially painted to represent the colour of Italy, it has traditional origins that have lived on. Due to the heritage of the brand and origins, the Racing Red is still the most sought after colour for all those who want to drive or purchase the model. However, it is not just the colour that makes the Ferrari iconic.
The iconic Ferrari logo
The Ferrari logo is also a global phenomenon. With merchandise all featuring the colourful symbol, there poses a question as to, what does the logo actually mean?
The Ferrari symbol can be traced back to World War I Italian fighter Francesco Barraca who painted a black prancing horse onto the fuselage of his plane. The horse featured was black for a specific reason; to act as a symbol of mourning for the fallen pilots. Francesco flew with this symbol in almost three dozen dogfights and won each time. Due to his success in the air, he was hailed as a national hero and the symbol became iconic.
When car loving Italian, Enzo Ferrari met the parents of the late Baracca, he was told to paint the prancing horse on his cars for good luck. Taking the advice on board, Enzo featured the black horse on a yellow background, symbolising the colour of Italian city Modena where Enzo was born. The logo is crowned with green, white and red stripes to symbolise the Italian national colours and has two letters to accompany the horse; S and F. These initials stand for the name Scuderia Ferrari, the name of the brand’s racing team.
It seems that the prancing horse truly did give Enzo good luck, as Ferrari stands as the most successful racing team in Formula 1 history, and has one of the most expensive cars in the world, therefore etching an iconic status in the eyes of billions globally.
